Ladakh

Ladakh, the land of jagged peaks and barren landscape is alluring and awe-inspiring. Hidden behind this harsh and forbidding façade is an ancient civilization and captivating people. Beyond the old frontiers lies the land of wilderness with its unaltered character and overwhelming natural beauty beckoning the more intense and adventurous of travellers. This awesome wildness and magic belongs to this great land of towering mountains and Buddhist simplicity.

Bounded by the Karakoram and Himalayan mountains, Ladakh is the largest province in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh is composed of the Leh and Kargil districts. The landscape of Ladakh, a high altitude desert, is defined by craggy, barren cliffs and plateaus. Ladakh is a favourite among adventure sports enthusiasts, offering unique adventures in trekking, mountaineering and white water rafting. Ladakh celebrates a numbers of monastic festivals – annual events of the major monasteries primarily in winters. The month of September, hosts the Ladhak festival, that gives a peek into the richness, depth and pageantry of Ladakh’s centuries-old culture, traditions and folk heritage.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh

Governed by a climate that provides about 50mm of rainfall each year, Ladakh is cold and dry. One, therefore, will be faced with a long and bitter winter of frozen landscape but yet very beautiful, and a short, hot summer when the precious glaciers melt.

April to June is one of the best times of the year to visit Leh. The sun shines bright and keeps the day temperatures warm. Leh has beautiful clear blue skies but do remember that the sun here has high intensity and travellers advised to carry protective gears. Leh showcases a different kind of frozen beauty in April in the form of snow-capped mountains, and frozen lakes that you can walk upon. Leh renders a different kind of feel as it recovers from the freezing winters.
